Hill Harper: Launches New Skin Care Line for Men & Women

Hill Harper, Co-Founder of Architect and Co., is debuting his new body and hair care products, H2L for men and JUA for women. H2L and JUA are premium all natural hair and body care product lines for men and women with affordable prices. Sylvia: We know that you’re a very multi-talented person; you’re an actor, producer, a philanthropists, and you’re also a NAACP Image Award recipient. Right now, you’re undertaking yet another exciting unique task as an entrepreneur with the launch of your new natural hair and body care product line: The H2L for Men and the JUA Essentials for Women. Can you please give us an overview of H2L and JUA, and how the concept came to be.

Hill: Well, you know for me, as an entrepreneur I’m always trying to impact the world in a positive way. I look at whatever I do, whether it’s as an artist, or a film, or a character. You try to ultimately do projects that actually have a positive impact, even if you’re playing the bad guy, let’s say in something, or the books I’ve written, or the foundation that I have. All of those things. And they usually come out pretty organically in the sense that you see a need that’s unmet and you want to meet the need. And what happened in this case was President Barack Obama appointed me to the President’s Cancer Panel. I kept learning more and more about our skin, and I realized that skin is the largest organ on the body, and every single day of our lives, even when we’re infants, people are putting things on our skin, or we’re putting things on our skin. And our skin absorbs all of that and it goes into our bloodstream, in our liver, our kidneys, and our endocrine system.

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2010, and I realized I only wanted to put natural healthy products onto my skin, just like you know it’s the same standard you use for eating food. And what I began to realize is there were no affordable products that did that on the market. You go to where your average American goes to shop for skincare and haircare products: most likely CVS, Duane Reade, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, or Amazon. There’s so many different places and 98% of those products are filled. Not just a little but trace amounts are filled with aluminum, parabens, damaging sulfates, petroleum, and oil. It’s just mind boggling. Even when they try to convince you it’s healthy, because they use all these names. But when I broke down all the ingredients, I was blown away. So I said there’s got to be a way. Even when you look at the organic market, the products are just too expensive. You look and it’s a $100 for this lotion, $40 for shampoo, $40 for conditioner. You know you go through it quickly. So I wanted to develop an affordable line, and that’s exactly what I did.

Hill: So I talk about it all the time, I talk in all my books, that we are the architects of our lives. And also I did it as subscription-based service, in that you’ll order and get products every two months. The cost is exponentially less, and you don’t have to worry about going to the store, and you’re going to get these products in the mail right to your door.

Sylvia: We want to know is what’s next for Mr. Hill Harper?

Hill: Well the next thing is to film All Eyes on Me. The Tupac Shakur film comes out June 16th. I’m a part of that film, so I’m excited for that. But I just did a pilot for ABC called The Good Doctor, and we’re going to find out the end of this week if it gets picked up or not. I think it has a good chance. It’s a very, very well-written show. And if that gets picked up then it’ll hopefully be on the fall schedule on ABC.
